Taking Overpopulation Seriously: Forced Mass Sterilisation

A program of sterilizing women...despite the relatively greater difficulty of the operation than vasectomy, might be easier to implement than trying to sterilize men.
...
The development of a long-term sterilizing capsule that could be implanted under the skin...opens additional possibilities for coercive fertility control. The capsule could be implanted at puberty and might be removable, with official permission, for a limited number of births.

...Adding a sterilant to drinking water or staple foods... would pose some very difficult political, legal, and social questions, to say nothing of the technical problems....To be acceptable, such a substance would have to meet some rather stiff requirements: it must be uniformly effective... _Obama Science Advisor John Holdren

More ideas here
World Without Humans
If humans are to deal with overpopulation, they may need to take some extreme measures, such as those favoured by people very close to US President Obama. Involuntary sterilisation and spiking water supplies with contraceptives are two of the suggestions that leftists of the environmentalist persuasion tend to throw around a lot, at get-togethers. Fortunately for such concerned leftists, Oregon health scientists are developing a new generation of contraceptives which might fit their needs:
... the contraceptive OHSU researchers are developing is not hormonal and [is] more focused on mechanisms that directly result in the release of an egg. This new approach targets the key enzymes responsible for the release of an egg.

...This research...has demonstrated that targeting these enzymes can prevent the release of an egg from the ovary. The next step for Hennebold and colleagues is to determine the delivery method of such a drug and the timetable for medication.

"Our hope is that the next generation of birth control is more targeted and has a higher effectiveness level," added Hennebold. _SD
Mass sterilisation is a common topic in fiction and in speculative writing. Sometimes the act of mass sterilisation is initiated by humans, and sometimes extraterrestrials or natural forces are to blame.

A program of mass sterilisation was actually carried out on remote villagers in Peru, and was attempted unsuccessfully in India.

In the context of widespread modern anxiety related to climate change, resource depletion, global pollution, animal species extinction, peak oil, and overpopulation, the idea of forced mass sterilisation of humans seems a very attractive idea to many in the left environmentalist movement. The news item below has been re-written by Al Fin political scientists to better reflect much of the modern thought current among leftist environmentalist thought leaders:
Tomorrow They Vote for Either Mass Sterilisation or Mass Killing
On Tuesday, April 5, the United States Department of Populations will choose between mass sterilization or killing, life or death, for residents in the states of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York, in the first use of new overpopulation legislation passed recently by the US Congress, and signed by the president.

The legislative project adopted by the US Congress promoting mass sterilisation was completely altered by the USDP to allow for the possibility of mass killings in certain situations where the need to reduce populations is particularly dire.

If the choice were left to the states themselves, it is likely that they would choose mass sterilisation over mass euthanasia. The federal government of the United States has decided that the issue is too important to be left to the states.

Environmental advisors to the president and to the congress prefer the use of mass euthanasia -- "to get it over with as quickly as possible." But overpopulation denialists continue to lobby the federal government, as protestors from across the US fill the Washington DC mall into the millions.
_Original Unaltered News Item

As you can see, Al Fin political scientists have mutilated the original item almost beyond recognition. But when it comes to the overpopulation crisis -- or any environmental crisis -- the ends justify the means.

In the interest of fairness, we will present a contrary viewpoint from pro-natalist Bryan Caplan:
The sterilization of half mankind would...be a horrible tragedy of epic proportions. But we wouldn't be losing the society we've got. We'd just be losing the society we could have had: Millions of new creative geniuses, and billions of additional people who'd enjoy being alive. If human beings were built differently, we might inconsolably miss the descendents we never had. For most of us, though, it's "out of sight, out of mind." We miss people we knew and lost a thousand times more than people who were never conceived. _BryanCaplan
Mr. Caplan brings up an interesting point: Once the mass sterilisation program is carried out, the people will never know the difference. They cannot possibly miss the people who are never conceived, never born -- people they never knew. Can they?

It is important that any program of mass sterilisation and/or euthanasia incorporate a wide range of safeguards to be sure that nothing goes wrong with the planning or execution. Most importantly, the elite environmentalists among us who have designed this program to save the planet and its many non-human species, must survive and prosper in the brave new world we create. Denialists and non-believers will be left in the dustbin of history, by any means necessary.

Finding Room to Stash the Masses Down the Rabbit Hole

All Images via Gizmag

Urbanisation is proceeding at full speed in the third world, as the growing mass of fertile persons swarm to population centres for work and meaning. "Where to put these swelling crowds of bodies?" ask the functionaries of third world countries. For a group of Mexican architects, the answer is clear: Put them down the rabbit hole.
This ambitious "Earthscraper" concept from BNKR Aquitectura seeks to address several problems faced by Mexico City - a growing population, the lack of new plots for construction, the need to conserve historic buildings and height restrictions on new structures. "The historic center of Mexico City is in desperate need for a pragmatic make-over," says BNKR. The solution - build an inverted pyramid underneath the main plaza at the heart of the city _Gizmag

A kind of reversal of the historical Aztec pyramid, the Earthscraper would aim to preserve the visual aesthetic of the historic city square whilst also retaining the public space, commonly used year round for events such as concerts, political gatherings, open-air exhibitions and cultural celebrations. The 775,000 square meter design is capped with a glass "roof" and habitable spaces are positioned around the central void, allowing natural light to filter down to even the lowest of levels. _Gizmag

The first ten stories would offer a tourist attraction, with all floors displaying Aztec and Mayan artifacts in a pre-Columbian museum. The design sees the next ten stories filled with retail shops and domestic housing, whilst the deepest levels offer 35 stories of office space. _Gizmag
It all sounds rather idealistic, if not utopian. More realistically, if such a hole were dug, it would be used as a high security prison for Mexico's most violent drug gangs and political insurgents. If you dig it, they will come.

No Way to Pretend that this Mangy Dog is a Beautiful Princess

More... FinancialArmageddon: Not a sense of recovery wherever you turn

The global economy remains devastated, despite all popular claims to the contrary. And it is not just Greece, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal which are in trouble. The US is beginning to feel the hurt from ludicrous fiscal and monetary policies which date back to the 1970s -- but which have reached particularly destructive levels under the Obama-Reid regime. The global economy still pivots around the US economy. And that is bad news all around.
1) Existing home sales for April were down 0.5% to 5.05 million as compared to 7.2 million at the peak. Inventories of homes for sale increased to a 9.2 months, the highest since December while prices were down 5% from a year earlier.

2) April housing starts dropped 10.2% to 523,000, barely above the recession lows, and below any level prior to 2008. According to the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) traffic of potential buyers was still extremely low. Keep in mind that this is an organization that usually puts a positive spin on any results.

3) While weekly initial claims for unemployment insurance declined to 409,000 from the prior week, the number has now been over 400,000 for six straight weeks after a period of coming in below that level.

4) The Philadelphia Fed Index for May fell sharply to 3.9, losing 39.5 points in the last two months. This is also well below the 1st quarter average of 32.9. Both new and unfilled orders dropped significantly while inventories also declined, indicating that the inventory buildup that helped support the recovery may be moving back in line with demand, which has been growing less than production.

5) Consistent with the above, April industrial production was flat. It is likely that production, which had consistently been running ahead of demand, is being reduced as inventories that were depleted during the recession have now caught up. This also may explain the higher level of initial claims.

6) The Empire State Manufacturing Survey was also down 9.8 points to 11.9, the lowest level since December. This index therefore confirms the Philly index and suggests similar lower results from the ISM manufacturing index.

7) The April index of leading indicators declined 0.3%. While one month does not make a trend it was the first monthly drop since last June, and fits in with what other indicators seem to be telling us.

8) Similarly, the ECRI Weekly leading indictor has been down for three of the last five weeks and has been about flat since mid-December after rising steadily from the recession lows. This is indicative of at least a pause in coming economic growth, and perhaps something worse.

9) April core retail sales increased only 0.2%, and were probably flat to slightly down when adjusted for inflation. Higher income from reduced social security withholding was more than offset by higher gasoline prices, tepid wage increases, high unemployment, lower home prices and recessionary levels of consumer confidence. And this is happening even before the end of QE2, which has been keeping the economy afloat since November.

10) The April Small Business Survey, after rising weakly from recession lows, has now dropped 3.1 points in the last two months. Even at its most recent high it was below any level in its history prior to 2008. Key segments that declined were plans to increase employment and capital expenditures. In addition the number expecting sales to rise also dropped.

11) In addition to the domestic concerns cited above, the global picture is also not looking too rosy. ECRI's long leading indicator of global industrial growth peaked last August at 0.7 and stood at 0.1 in March. ECRI managing director Lakshman Achuthan stated "There's a downturn in global industrial growth in clear sight". EU production fell in March and retail sales have been flat for six months. In the UK there's been no GDP growth for six months. Japanese GDP dropped 3.7% annualized in the 1st quarter and 3.0% in the 4th. Note that the earthquake occurred on March 11th, toward the end of the quarter, so cannot be fully blamed for the 1st quarter and not at all for the 4th. Industrial output in all of the BRIC nations seems to be slowing, and current monetary and fiscal policies suggest more to come.

All in all it seems to us that the odds are high that a domestic and global economic slowdown is already in place. In the U.S. the slowdown is happening with only six weeks to go before the end of QE2, a program that has been a major prop for even the tepid recovery we've undergone so far. For the stock market nothing seems to matter until, suddenly, it does. _ComstockFunds

Drowning in Debt: Why the economy still cannot seem to recover.

Reading the consequences of debt: The hidden taxes of debts, deficits, and a deflationary : inflationary chaos -- along with dysfunctional government regulations, incentives, corruption, and laws -- combine to crush any nascent recovery in its cradle.

But the disaster is compounded by the effect of demographics: If human capital is not growing and improving, any realistic hope of economic growth and development is delusional.

Japan is the canary in the coal mine, the early warning signal for the rest of the world, on the dangers of debt and demography. The PIIGS of Europe are following closely behind. Russia would be a global economic basket case except for Siberian wealth -- and how much longer can the bear hold on to Siberia in the face of shrinking demographics and evaporating human capital?

Will the people of the west ever wake up to what they are doing -- and allowing to be done -- to themselves? If not, what are the alternatives? Who is John Galt?

Debt and Demography: A Deadly Double Dose

Mish

Interest on the US national debt is scheduled to explode wildly out of control, faster than entitlements, faster than any other government expenditure. And yet the US government cannot bring itself to stop its suicidally profligate deficit spending, adding over US$1 trillion a year to the debt!.

This is clearly a global problem, not just a US problem. As the economic foundations of the world's military hegemon and economic powerhouse crumble under an overload of debt and collapsing demographics, the rest of the world is going to feel the pain as well. Just as US baby boomers can find no one to buy their accumulated lifetime wealth, so the US government is finding it harder to find buyers for its accumulating debt.

Across the advanced economies, demographics are collapsing. And the US is not even on the list of the 17 countries with the fastest-collapsing demographics. The deadly combination of exponentially rising debt on top of a quickly collapsing demographic, becomes irreversible after a certain point. But in order for welfare states to maintain their bloated social benefit spending schedules, they must go deeply into debt -- just at the time that their productive workers are disappearing in time.

At the state government level of the US, reality is slowly and spottily sinking into the minds of those who are tasked with keeping the pensions and benefits solvent. But the blowback from leftist government unions, communtiy organisers, and other leftist special interest groups is severe and verging on open violence. In Europe the leftist backlash against proposed austerity programs -- even very modest and minimal plans -- is likewise bordering on open insurrection.

Obama has a plan for a fundamentally different America. We know that Obama has a plan -- he must have a plan! But we cannot decrypt the US President's plan from his words or even his actions. We may have to wait a hundred years, and look back in time at what we can learn about Mr. Obama's plans, to finally understand.

Al Fin has been suggesting that readers should buy precious metals, acquire the capacity to grow their own food, develop the means to defend yourself, your loved ones, and your possessions, and more -- for years now. Some readers may still wonder what he is getting at....

This is Ziona Chana and his family -- the world's largest family. They live comfortably and happily in a multi-story home with 100 rooms. It is said by his sons that Chana marries the poorest women of the village, in order to provide them with a better life.
These are Chana's 39 wives. His youngest wives occupy the rooms closest to his own. His wives provide companionship one by one, according to an orderly scheduled rotation.
The 100 room household is a busy place, with constant cooking, cleaning, childcare, and other typical concerns. Chana is pleased to be the husband of the world's largest family.

Answer to Global Aging? Traveling Stud Ensenbles

The world faces a population bomb of old people, such as those seated on the bench above. Not only are countries such as Russia and Japan doomed to fade into the twilight of history due to ultra-low birthrates. Entire towns and regions of developed nations such as the United States and Canada are dwindling into non-existence.

It is not only prairie towns, farm towns, and isolated rural towns that are shrinking to nothing. Scenic coastal towns such as Camden, Maine, are desperate to prevent the continuing loss of population. Much more than regional colour, history, and tax bases are being lost. Entire ways of life and culture are slipping out of time. What is to be done?
StudEnsemble
A new industry is rising up to meet the needs of aging populations -- particularly in North America, but also in western Europe. Traveling ensembles of human studs, such as the Latin Stallions, have risen to prevent the threatened demographic disaster.

Al Fin recently traveled to Camden, to meet with Jose Mendez, El Jefe of the Latin Stallions.

Al Fin: Why have you and the Stallions come to Camden, Jefe? Were you invited by the mayor or city council?

Jefe: (Laughing) No, Al. We could see there was a need for our services here. The population is dropping because the bit-... uh, the young women are not having babies. It's a problem we know how to solve, so we're solving it.

AF: But how do the townspeople of Camden react to what you are doing?

Jefe: The bi-... er, women don't mind, Al. Some of the older people give us the dirty looks, sure. It's an Anglo thing for unmarried women and girls not to have babies. But you see where that hangup's got them? We're here to help.

AF: So the Stallions are just here temporarily? You don't plan to settle here, like on a stud farm, maybe get married?

Jefe: Hell, no, Al! We're the "Travlin" Latin Stallions. We don't stop no place for nobody. There's lots of towns like Camden that needs us.

AF: Okay, but how do you finance your travels? Who pays your way as you go from shrinking town to shrinking town?

Jefe: We don' talk about that to the public, Al. But we're more than just studs. We're businessmen. We move more than one product, if you know what I mean.

AF: I think I do, Jefe. Well, thanks for speaking with me, and good luck re-populating the small towns and backwoods.

Jefe: Hey, no problem Al. We know what needs to be done. If these ... women need a little help, we're there for it.

See, Al, in a capitalist country there's solutions to any problem you got. Sometimes you need an outsider to see what needs to be done....

_______________________________________________

There you have it. The outlook for Russia and Japan may not be so bright, unless such countries can develop stud solutions of their own. Artificial wombs might be the best solution, but we are still years and decades away from being able to mass produce effective artificial wombs. Until then, the ... er, women may need something a bit more convincing to help them see the light. Perhaps something more studly than they are accustomed to?

It should be noted that in the US, males are far more likely to commit crime than females. Juvenile males are more likely to commit crime than middle aged and older males. And black males commit more crime than hispanic males who commit more crime than white males who commit more crime than asian males.

One scholar's look at some of the reasons for the demographic discrepancies.

Keep in mind that in the US, neighboring cities may have drastically different crime rates. Even different parts of the same city may present distinctly different pictures in terms of crime and predation. Persons who live in these areas can tell you which areas are safer than others -- although it often seems that college professors, journalists, and politicians would rather choke on their own political correctness than to tell the truth about crime.

The crime rates of Europe and Canada have changed to reflect an increasing diversity, even as crime rates across much of the US have declined to reflect a changing population pyramid (fewer youths proportionately) -- and perhaps to reflect tougher sentencing laws.

Below you can see population "diversity" by county across the US. You may be told that any correlation between crime rates and specific types of diversity are purely coincidental. But if you are making a choice as to where to locate yourself and your family, you may want to do more digging.
The point of this article is to keep a clear head when traveling and relocating. Political correctness may help you get elected, but it can also get you killed if you take it too seriously. Unfortunately, many of the same problems associated with crime and diversity in the US are beginning to be a problem in Holland, Sweden, France, parts of Canada, and even parts of Australia.

Cultivate situational awareness, and always carry at least 10 concealed weapons at all times.
